ApprovedFamily of sulfated polysaccharides extracted from red seaweed, used as a thickener, gelling agent, and stabilizer. Available in three main types: kappa, iota, and lambda carrageenan.
Concerns
- •degraded carrageenan (poligeenan) is a known inflammatory agent
- •animal studies link food-grade carrageenan to intestinal inflammation and colitis
- •some researchers advocate for removal from food supply
- •the National Organic Standards Board voted to remove it from approved organic ingredients
